Berlin confirms deployment of elite anti-terror commando in Iraq
IRNA
Berlin, Nov 3, IRNA -- A German Interior Ministry spokesman Monday confirmed that "specially equipped forces of the Federal Border Guard" have been deployed in Iraq to protect German aid workers. "I can confirm that specially equipped forces of the Federal Border Guard are on location ...," Daniel Hoelting said during a press conference. He refused to provide details as to when and where the German anti-terror forces are operating, citing confidentiality. The weekly Der Spiegel magazine reported earlier that Germany had sent its elite anti-terror commando GSG-9 to Iraq in an effort to safeguard German relief workers in Iraq who have been in charge of restoring a water purification plant. Berlin voiced "great concern" this week over the deteriorating security situation in Iraq following the latest series of deadly attacks against UN organizations in the war-stricken country.
