Khatami: Iran is for stability, security in Iraq
IRNA
Tehran, Oct 14, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami said here on Tuesday that Iran calls for stability and security in Iraq. Khatami told the visiting Leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Jalal Talabani that instability in Iraq is detrimental for different ethnic and religious groups in Iraq, including Shiites and Sunnis, as well as for the entire region and one of the root causes of instability in Iraq is presence of the occupying forces in the country. He expressed hope that Governing Council in Iraq would be a prelude to establishment of a broad-based government, comprising different groups and tribes. He said all ethnic groups should be permitted a fair share in future Iraqi government. He added that one should think free from any ethnicity on an Iraq, wherein all peacefully and cordially co-exist. The president stressed the need for reconstruction and progress in Iraq and said Iran is ready to contribute to the goal. He called the car bomb assassination of the late Ayatollah Seyed Mohammad-Baqer Hakim, the ex-Chief of the Supreme Assembly of Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SAIRI), as a great loss for the independent, and progressive Iraq and the Islamic ideology consistent with ration and progress. Talabani said for his part, "We want an independent Iraq, wherein Shiites, Kurds and other ethnic groups do not face any danger." Thanking Iran for its readiness to contribute to stability and calm in Iraq, Talabani called for an increase in Iran-Iraq commercial transactions. He provided the president on the first hand account of the process for establishment of a governing council in Iraq and the role of ethnic groups and religions in the united and independent Iraq`s government structure. 216/AH/210 End
