Kharrazi says Iran will not remain indifferent towards Iraq
IRNA
New York, Sept 26, IRNA -- Iran`s Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi said here on Thursday that as a neighbor, Iran will not remain indifferent towards ongoing developments and their adverse consequences in Iraq. Kharrazi told the UN commercial council meeting that omission and ouster of former Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein had been a positive move, leaving drastic impacts on the region, but if Iraq`s occupation continues, conditions in the country would get worse. He said the UN`s effective role in Iraq will help international system work effectively in Iraq. Continued occupation of Iraq has been a wrong step taken at present juncture, encouraging extremism, said Kharrazi. He referred to misunderstandings on Islam and abuse of the issue by certain groups and wings in a bid to fan conflict between the Western and Islamic civilizations and said the only option remaining for the world of Islam and the West at present juncture is to avoid extremism. He condemned the US` media publicity against Islam and Muslim states and said the publicity pollute the ongoing atmosphere and provoke enmity and hostility. He added that the mistakes have widened the gap between the US and other world people. A proper standard is needed to be adopted to remove the ongoing mistakes, said Kharrazi, adding that strong measures should be taken to prevent growing distrust and rift. 216/216 End
