
Iraq: Governing Council Member Dies Five Days After Assassination Attempt
Baghdad, 25 September 2003 (RFE/RL) -- A member of Iraq's Governing Council, Aquilah al-Hashimi, has died, five days after being shot in the stomach in an assassination attempt.
L. Paul Bremer, head of the U.S.-led administration, announced that al-Hashimi died of her gunshot wounds today. Al-Hashimi was ambushed by six men in a pickup truck while driving near her home in western Baghdad on 20 September. She was preparing to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Al-Hashimi had been cared for in a U.S. military hospital in central Baghdad where the U.S.-led coalition has its headquarters.
Al-Hashimi served in the Foreign Ministry during Saddam Hussein's government with experience working on UN programs and was the only official of the ousted regime appointed to the 25-member Governing Council.
