Iran`s FM asks for establishment of popular Iraqi gov`t in Baghdad
IRNA
Damascus, Sept 8, IRNA -- Iran`s Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamal Kharrazi here after a meeting with his Syrian counterpart Farouq al-Shara asked for the establishment of a democratic, popular government in Baghdad as soon as possible. Kharrazi who was speaking to the press at the Syrian Foreign Ministry reiterated, "The most important thing in Iraq is that the Iraqi nation`s will should be taken into account, and they should be allowed to establish their own national democratic government, that would live in peace with all its neighbors." He said, "The first step towards the establishment of such a government would be the evacuation of all foreign military forces from Iraq, so that the Iraqis would be able to decide about the type of their political system under the supervision of the United Nations quite freely." Referring to his talks with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and al-Shara, Kharrazi added, "In those meetings we exchanged viewpoints on Tehran-Damascus bilateral ties and cooperation, Iraq`s latest developments, and the Middle East crisis." Kharrazi evaluated the two countries` stands regarding regional issues as "quite close to each other", adding, "As two strong neighbors of Iraq, Iran and Syria are both deeply concerned, and naturally influenced by the developments in that country." Expressing deep sorrow over the ongoing criminal acts of Israel against the Palestinian nation, the Iranian top diplomat emphasized, "No plan would ever be implemented in the Middle East region successfully, unless the Palestinian people`s rights would be fully respected and observed." Kharrazi said, "It was quite clear from scratch that Israel is the biggest enemy of the establishment of peace in the region, and unfortunately, so long as the United States continues its unlimited support for all Israeli policies, we cannot witness the establishment of a just and lasting peace in the Middle East."
