Indo-Russian talks to evolve common position on Iraq begins
IRNA
New Delhi, Sept 8, IRNA -- India and Russia will begin consultations on Monday to evolve a common position on their role in Iraq and on the issue of terrorism. According to local press reports here on Monday, Indian Foreign Secretary, Kanwal Sibal and his Russian counterpart Vyachislav Trubnikov will meet in Moscow to discuss the recent US draft for a fresh UN resolution on Iraq. Russia has rejected the US draft in its present form and may suggest some amendments. Moscow is also keen to seek India`s views. Both Russia and India believe that the US and allies need to put in place a representative government in Baghdad. They also favor a prominent role for the UN in both administrative and political matters in Iraq. Russia has strongly advised India against sending its troops to Iraq without an explicit UN mandate. Sibal and Trubnikov are also expected to discuss the possibility of an Indian role in the G-8 Counter Terrorism Committee that Russia has supported. New Delhi believes that getting on board the panel will provide it a platform to articulate its concerns on terrorism. /212 End
