Berlin rules out troop deployment in Iraq even with UN mandate
IRNA
Berlin, Sept 4, IRNA -- The German government will not provide troops for a multi-national peacekeeping force in Iraq even with a United Nations mandate, DPA cited a foreign ministry spokesman as saying Thursday. The latest German stance followed press reports about American and NATO pressure on Germany to dispatch soldiers to war-stricken Iraq. Berlin has repeatedly ruled out any kind of military engagement in Iraq, citing its limited global military capacities. Germany strongly opposed the US-led war in Iraq, leading to a dramatic worsening of relations between Berlin and Washington. OT/213 END
