Iran, Jordan hail establishment of Iraqi Governing Council

IRNA

Tehran, Sept 3, IRNA -- Iran and Jordan in a statement on Wednesday
welcomed the establishment of the Iraqi Governing Council, and
described it as a step toward handing over the power to the Iraqi
people.
The statement, that was released at the end of the Tehran
visit of the Jordanian King Abdullah II, also highlighted the need
to retrieve the rights of the Palestinian nation, and called for
the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with
Bait-ul-Moqaddas as its capital.
Iran and Jordan in the statement, signed by President Mohammad
Khatami and King Abdullah II, highlighted the need to promote security
and stability in the region, and called for making the Middle East a
nuclear free region.
The two countries further described as positive the results of
their joint economic commission meetings, and stressed expansion of
mutual ties by relying on available potentials and capacities.
Tehran and Amman vowed to push forward the idea of dialogue among
civilizations and to boost cooperation in that area, and underscored
the need to forge joint positions among Islamic states toward various
international issues.
King Abdullah II arrived in Tehran on Tuesday for a two-day state
visit, the first by a Jordanian monarch in 25 years.
During his stay here, the Jordanian king held separate
meetings with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President
Mohammad Khatami and Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi and discussed
promotion of Tehran-Amman ties as well as key regional and
international developments.
