Berlin urges "road map" for restoring Iraqi sovereignty
IRNA
Berlin, Oct 2, IRNA -- Germany Thursday called for a "road map" which would outline the time-table for a rapid restoration of Iraqi sovereignty. "From our point of view, a road map which would give orientation points for a political process (in Iraq), is needed. The premise of this political process is that Iraqis themselves are responsible for the political and economic reconstruction of their country," high ranking German government circles told IRNA. "That`s why it is our policy to demand a possible speedy transfer of sovereignty to the Iraqi people," the circles added. Meanwhile a leading German government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said while America`s latest UN resolution on Iraq was "nearing" the German, French and Russian position, it "still required further work". Germany, France and Russia have repeatedly demanded a central political role of the UN in Iraq`s rebuilding process. The US has been reluctant to give the UN more than a minimal authority in Iraq`s post-war reconstruction process. "We still don`t see a political perspective which would hand over political responsibility to Iraqis. That`s a key problem," the German official said. OT/213 End
