Supreme Leader attends Ayatollah Hakim`s memorial service
IRNA
Tehran, Aug 31, IRNA -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on Sunday took part in a memorial service held for Head of the Supreme Assembly of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SAIRI) Ayatollah Mohammad Baqer Hakim. President Mohammad Khatami, Majlis Speaker Mehdi karroubi, Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, cabinet members, the first vice-president, senior clerics and a number of ambassadors from Muslim countries were also present in the function. Ayatollah Mohammad Baqer Hakim was martyred on Friday in a car bomb blast in the holy city of Najaf. Hakim, who spent some 23 years in exile in Iran before returning in triumph to Iraq earlier this year, met a martyr`s fate along with his bodyguards. Hakim`s assassination took place as he was returning from the Najaf Friday prayers which he himself had led. Meanwhile, in an address to the ceremony, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Hassan Rowhani condemned the bomb blast and referred to the United States and Britain as accountable for the tragedy in Iraq. Rowhani said that a Zionist group affiliated to Mossad had visited Iraq one week before Ayatollah Hakim`s assassination and that so heavy bombing was not the work of an individual or a novice group.
