Karroubi says Iraq`s security must be left to people
IRNA
Tehran, Aug 31, IRNA -- Majlis Speaker Mehdi Karroubi said here on Sunday that the recent bomb blasts in Iraq should be viewed as "a lesson to learn" that the security of the country must be left to the people. Karroubi, speaking at the Majlis open session, said the blasts show that the occupiers cannot establish security in Iraq, adding that the occupiers must let the people control the affairs of the country to stop the recurrence of such incidents. "The occupiers had been repeatedly warned that only a popular government can provide Iraq`s security, and that it is only the Iraqi people who can make the country secure," he said. Iran`s Majlis speaker was referring to two major bomb blasts in Iraq that inflicted heavy casualties only ten days apart. A deadly explosion in Iraq`s holy city of Najaf on Friday left over 100 killed and some 200 wounded. Among those killed was Ayatollah Mohammad Baqer al-Hakim, the leader of the Supreme Assembly of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SAIRI). Also, a massive truck bomb at UN headquarters in Baghdad on August 19 left at least 24 people killed and over 100 wounded. The UN top envoy to Iraq Vieira de Mello was among the dead. "Security [in Iraq] can never be established merely by appointing a governor. Rather, it is the people who should be enabled to establish security in the country," Karroubi said. "The US says it cannot establish security in Iraq`s holy cities because its troops are not allowed to enter those cities.... Yet, Iraq was no holy city and the US troops were not able to establish security there, either." Iran`s Majlis speaker called Hakim`s death a major loss for the Iraqi people, stressing that the cleric was strongly withstanding the occupation of the country. He lauded Hakim`s efforts to push forward the cause of revolution in Iraq against the Baathist regime of Saddam Hussein, and spoke highly of his efforts to help the Palestinian resistance groups. Karroubi further warned that Shia clerics are becoming the target of terror attacks in Iraq, and cautioned that this might soon include the Sunni clerics, as well as the Iraqi intellectuals and nationalists as part of a plan to bring a puppet regime to power in the country. "The occupiers must leave the control of the affairs to the people. The people can promote unity and solidarity to carry out their duties and commitments," AA/210 End
