British charity pulls foreign workers out of Iraq

London, Aug 26, IRNA -- Oxfam has withdrawn its international workers from Iraq due to increasing insecurity problems, the British charity announced Tuesday. Spokesman for the charity, Brendan Cox said that a number of staff, including Britons, left for Jordan on Monday, but added that Iraqi workers were remaining. Oxfam`s decision follows the International Committee of the Red Cross to pull its volunteers out of the Iraqi capital in the wake of the bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad last week. The British charity said that it was responding to the broader insecurity problem inside the country rather than to one particular event. The continuing lack of security has forced British Airways in resuming passenger flights to Basra despite being given clearance by the Anglo-American Coalition Provisional Authority. A spokeswoman for British Airways told IRNA Tuesday that it was concentrating its efforts on improving the infrastructure and transport facilities around Basra airport but was still hoping to resume flight `as soon as its safety requirements were met`. Polish carrier LOT was also reported to have cancelled its new scheduled service to Basra that was planned to start on Wednesday due to fear over security. HC/AH/210 End
