INTRO: British military officials in Iraq say three British soldiers have been killed in southern Iraq. Kirk Troy has the details from Baghdad.

TEXT: Officials say the three British soldiers died and another was wounded in the southern city of Basra.

Officials have yet to provide details of Saturday's deadly incident in Iraq's second largest city, but eyewitnesses say the soldiers' vehicle crashed into a building, after it came under fire from gunmen in a truck.

An Iraqi woman and two children were reported injured by the out-of-control vehicle, and an Iraqi man was wounded by crossfire before the gunmen made their escape.

The deaths brought to at least 11 the number of Britons killed in combat in Iraq since President Bush declared major fighting over on May first.

On Friday, Mr. Bush said he expects more foreign troops to join U-S-led forces working to stabilize war-torn Iraq.

The president told reporters in Seattle that the United Nations could have a vital role in Iraq, and that talks are underway on a new U-N Security Council resolution to encourage other nations to participate. (SIGNED)
