TRAVEL DOCUMENTS TO BE AVAILABLE IN THE NEAR FUTURE
Baghdad, Iraq...August 19, 2003--The Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) of Iraq wishes to clarify information which recently appeared Alsa'a Almostaqla and Al Moutamar newspapers concerning Iraqi passports.
The CPA Ministry of Interior is working closely with their Iraqi counterparts to restore the ability of Iraq to issue passports to its citizens. As part of this process, an Interim Travel Document will be issued in lieu of a passport. However, this document is under development and will be available in the near future. Currently, no travel documents are available.
Locations have been identified to serve as offices for the issuing of travel documents. These buildings are presently still undergoing repairs and are not open.
Contrary to published reports, there are no plans to use the Baghdad Convention Center for passport purposes now or at any time in the future. Once the designated buildings are repaired, full information concerning locations and hours of operation will be announced to the public.
The CPA wishes to remind all Iraqis that travel outside the country without a passport is possible. However, travelers should first contact the destination country to determine if there are any restrictions on entry. For example, a visa may be required. Each country has different requirements, and travelers should always check first before traveling.
