  • 4ID SOLDIER KILLED CENTCOM Release 13 Aug 2003-- One 4th Infantry Division soldier was killed and one wounded when the M-113 armored personnel carrier they were riding in struck an explosive device near the town of Ad Dwar at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 13.
  • SOLDIER KILLED IN CONVOY ATTACK CENTCOM Release 13 Aug 2003-- One 4th Infantry Division soldier was killed and two were wounded at approximately 6:15 p.m. Aug. 12 when their convoy was attacked by an improvised explosive device in the vicinity of Al Taji.

  • US/IRAQ RESOLUTION VOA 13 Aug 2003 -- The United States wants a vote as early as Thursday on a resolution approving a 12-month mandate for a new U-N Assistance Mission in Iraq.
  • Iraq: U.S. Seeks Security Council Endorsement Of Governing Council, UN Mission RFE/RL 13 Aug 2003 -- United Nations Security Council members have begun discussing a U.S. proposal to formally endorse the Iraqi Governing Council and set up a new UN mission in Iraq. Diplomats say there could be agreement this week on a draft resolution containing the proposals. The resolution is seen as crucial for extending international legitimacy to the U.S.-appointed Iraqi council as well as acknowledging the growing UN role in Iraq.

  • UN envoy sees rapprochement between Iraqi Council and Arab League UN News Centre 13 Aug 2003 -- The top United Nations envoy in Iraq today held out the prospect of breaking the regional isolation of the Iraqi Governing Council following his discussions with officials in Cairo last weekend, with a possible meeting next week between the United States-appointed body and the 22-member Arab League secretariat starting a rapprochement.

  • DEMOCRATIC IRAQ VOA 13 Aug 2003 -- Violence, shortages and protests continue in postwar Iraq, but President Bush pledges to bring democracy to the country, citing the creation of a 25-member Governing Council that represents Iraq's main ethnic and religious groups. In a recent speech, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice said democracy once established in Iraq can spread throughout the now authoritarian Middle East.
