  • PAUL BREMER VOA 06 Aug 2003 -- U-S soldiers say Iraqi informants and local police are helping them round up Saddam Hussein loyalists in northern Iraq. An American officer says Wednesday coalition forces raided seven locations overnight, in and near Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit. The Americans arrested 18 loyalists of the ousted regime and seized what they described as large amounts of weapons. Coalition forces say Iraqi police also turned over a man suspected of organizing attacks against U-S soldiers. The man is the brother of one Saddam Hussein's top bodyguards. Meanwhile, U-S soldiers in Tikrit are soon to begin training 35 Iraqis as the first members of a civil defense force. Paul Bremer is the U-S Administrator for Iraq.   • Coalition Provisional Authority Trains 45 Iraqi Humanitarian Deminers Washington File 06 Aug 2003 -- The United States has trained 45 Iraqi humanitarian deminers, marking a critical step in helping Iraq develop its own capacity to rid the country of large amounts of land mines and unexploded ordnance, according to a media note released by the State Department in Washington August 6.
  • Iraq: Is International Recognition Next Step For Governing Council? RFE/RL 06 Aug 2003 -- The UN chief, Kofi Annan, has urged the UN Security Council to recognize Iraq's new Governing Council. How close is the U.S.-appointed body to getting international recognition, and what benefits would this bring?
  • IRAQ / WOMEN VOA 06 Aug 2003 -- A leading human rights group says many Iraqi women and girls have been abducted, assaulted and raped by Iraqi men since the fall of the Saddam Hussein regime. The group, Human Rights Watch, has called on the coalition to do more to ensure their safety, and the coalition says it is beginning to address the issue.
  • IRAQ: Food shipments meet targets, but Iraqis fear a future without rations IRIN 06 Aug 2003 -- As the sun blazes down on the small street in Baghdad’s Al-Washash district, two women wait quietly for their monthly food ration. "Without the ration we couldn’t survive. If they stopped it the black market prices would immediately go up and we wouldn’t be able to get anything," one of them tells IRIN. "I have a family of five to feed. My husband died a long time ago and I’m responsible for them."
