The U.S. coalition commander in Iraq said Tuesday Saddam Hussein's sons, Uday and Qusay have been killed.
U.S. Army Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez said that the sons, Uday and Qusay, were among the four bodies found after a six-hour military operation conducted by coalition forces in the northern Iraqi town of Mosul.
He said the bodies were in a condition that could be identified even before DNA testing which is currently taking place.
Lieutenant General Sanchez said the killing of Saddam Hussein's sons would have an effect on the recent guerilla attacks on coalition troops believed to be carried out by Baath party sympathizers.
"This will prove to the Iraqi people that at least these two members of the regime will not be coming back into power which is what we have stated over and over again," he said. "And we remain totally committed to the Hussein regime never being in power and tormenting the people."
Two hundred troops of the 101st Airborne division used rockets and gunfire to target the compound where several top Iraqi officials were believed to be.
