Iraq: U.S. Checking To See If Saddam's Sons Killed In Shootout

Washington, 22 July 2003 (RFE/RL) -- U.S. officials say four Iraqis were killed today during a U.S. raid in northern Iraq on a house where high-ranking members of Saddam Hussein's ousted regime were suspected of staying. U.S. officials say they are investigating whether Hussein's sons Uday and Qusay may have been among the dead.

The raid at the house in the northern city of Mosul sparked a shootout between members of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division and gunmen holed up inside the compound, which suffered severe damage as a result of the battle.

The identities of the dead are not yet certain. But U.S. officials said they were trying to determine whether Hussein's sons Uday and Qusay were among the dead.

Both were below only Saddam in importance in the former regime.

Separately today, one U.S. soldier was reported killed and another wounded when their convoy was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade northwest of Baghdad.
