INTRO: In Iraq, a U-S soldier has been killed and as many as six others wounded in an attack in a Baghdad suburb. V-O-A Correspondent Alisha Ryu has details from the Iraqi capital.

TEXT: The U-S military says an American military convoy came under attack with rocket-propelled grenades early Monday morning in the Monsour district of Baghdad.

A U-S soldier was killed. The wounded have been evacuated to a military hospital. Monsour is a wealthy neighborhood with no previous major incidents of violence against U-S forces.

Coalition officials have been concerned about a possible further escalation of violence on Monday against U-S and British troops. Monday marks the anniversary of the day in 1958 that Iraqi nationalists overthrew the country's last king.

The coalition blames Saddam Hussein loyalists for most of the attacks against its troops, which have killed nearly 40 soldiers in the past two and a half months.

But on Sunday, a previously unknown group, claiming to have links to the al-Qaida terrorist network, said that it was behind the attacks on U-S troops in Iraq, not the followers of Saddam Hussein. (Signed)
