New Iraqi Governing Council to Begin Work Soon

The U.S. administration in Iraq is said to be in the final stages of setting up a governing council, the country's first national political body since the fall of Saddam Hussein. There is no official word from U.S. officials about when the new council will begin its work, but some reports say the inaugural meeting may take place as early as Sunday.

About 25 prominent Iraqis representing various political, religious and tribal groups are expected to be named to the council, which will have many decision making powers needed to run the country. The development comes, as U.S. soldiers continue to come under attack in Iraq.

Explosions rocked a U.S. military police position at a prison west of Baghdad early Saturday, but there were no reports that anyone was seriously hurt.

Elsewhere, U.S. soldiers have been pulling out of the main police station in the flashpoint town of Fallujah, turning over security control to a new U.S.-trained Iraqi police force. Thursday the Iraqis threatened to quit, unless U.S. troops pulled out of the building, saying their presence make Iraqi officers targets of pro-Saddam insurgents.

U.S. military officials say U.S. troops will remain in other parts of Fallujah.
