Iraq: UN envoy to consult with Saudi leaders11 July Expanding his consultations on efforts to help Iraqis create a stable, democratic and sovereign country, United Nations envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello will travel to Taif, Saudi Arabia, tomorrow for talks with Crown Prince Abdullah and other senior Saudi officials.
Mr. Vieira de Mello, Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative, who has already held consultations with a full spectrum of Iraqi representatives in Baghdad as well as making four trips to various parts of the country, intends to visit other neighbouring capitals in due course.
He is expected to brief the Security Council in New York on 22 of July on his mission, which was mandated by a Security Council resolution at the end of May.
The tasks entrusted to him by the resolution include "working intensively with the Authority (the United States and its partners), the people of Iraq, and others concerned to advance efforts to restore and establish national and local institutions for representative governance, including by working together to facilitate a process leading to an internationally recognized, representative government of Iraq."
