A tape recording of a speaker claiming to be Saddam Hussein says there will soon be many more attacks against U.S. soldiers in Iraq.
The tape broadcast Friday on Al-Jazeera television coincided with fighting that killed one U.S. soldier, wounded 18 others and killed 11 Iraqi attackers.
The speaker says over the next few days, newly-formed "holy warrior" cells will step up the fight against what he called "infidel invaders." He urges Iraqis to protect those fighting the U.S. occupation.
The speaker also mocks the United States by asking, "Where are the weapons?" He says the U.S. claim that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction was a false cover to justify the invasion.
The taped speaker says he is in Iraq and says the recording was made June 14. Reporters from Al-Jazeera and other news organizations say the tape sounds like Saddam Hussein.
The White House says the Central Intelligence Agency is working to determine if the tape is authentic.
Washington is offering a $25 million reward for information leading to the capture of Saddam Hussein, or proof he is dead. A $15 million reward is being offered for information on Saddam's two fugitive sons, Qusay and Ouday.
At least 26 U.S. soldiers have been killed in combat since President Bush declared an end to major fighting in Iraq on May 1. More than 200 soldiers have died in fighting, accidents or from disease since the war began in late March.
