U.S. military officials in Iraq say at least seven American soldiers were wounded Thursday when military vehicles came under attack in two separate incidents. The officials said six soldiers were wounded when their two-vehicle U.S. military convoy was hit by an explosive near the town of Ramadi, about 100 kilometers west of Baghdad. Another U.S. soldier and a six-year-old Iraqi boy were wounded during a fire fight in Baghdad.

The U.S. Central Command says the fighting broke out when a gunman opened fire on a U.S. troop patrol in a rural part of the Iraqi capital. A Central Command statement said soldiers returned fire, killing the gunman and wounding the boy, who was with the gunman.

Despite almost daily attacks on coalition forces, President Bush vowed again Wednesday that U.S. forces will remain in Iraq until it is free and run by the Iraqi people. Mr. Bush said the United States will deal harshly with those behind the attacks. Meanwhile, the U.S. Central Command says Monday's deadly explosion at an Iraqi mosque was apparently related to a bomb-making class being taught at the facility.

The Central Command says a joint investigation with police in the town of Fallujah shows coalition forces were not responsible for the blast, which killed seven people and injured 10 others. Residents of Fallujah had blamed U.S. forces for the explosion.

Also Wednesday, Poland sent an advance team of soldiers to Iraq. Poland will eventually take control of one of the three military sectors Iraq has been divided into.
