MEDIA NOTE
Iraq: Coalition Provisional Authority
Solicitation for Commercial Air Service to Iraq
On July 2, 2003 the Coalition Provisional Authority issued a notice
soliciting air carriers to apply to provide commercial service to
Iraq. The United States welcomes this important step forward in Iraq's
reintegration with the rest of the world.
The notice was distributed to airline industry organizations
worldwide, and all airlines may apply. Air service to Baghdad
International Airport will be limited initially to three daily
round-trip flights (seven days per week), two of which will be
regional (Middle East) and one international. The commencement date
for commercial air service is still to be determined.
Carrier application procedures and eligibility requirements, relating
primarily to conformity with international safety and security
standards, are outlined in the notice. To provide service to Iraq,
U.S. carriers must also meet the respective requirements of the U.S.
Central Command, the Department of Transportation, the Federal
Aviation Administration, the Transportation Security Administration,
and other U.S. agencies.
The carrier solicitation notice will be posted on the Coalition
Provisional Authority website (www.cpa-iraq.org), which is expected to
be operational shortly. In the meantime, a copy of the notice can be
