Text: U.S.-led Coalition Seeking to Restore International Air Links to Iraq
(Information carried on new CPA website) (300) On July 2, the Department of State issued a notice inviting international air carriers to apply to provide service to Baghdad, Iraq. Additional information on the application procedures is available on the official website for the Coalition Provisional Authority at www.cpa-iraq.org. Following is the text of the July 2 notice. (begin text) U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of the Spokesman July 2, 2003 MEDIA NOTE Iraq: Coalition Provisional Authority Solicitation for Commercial Air Service to Iraq On July 2, 2003 the Coalition Provisional Authority issued a notice soliciting air carriers to apply to provide commercial service to Iraq. The United States welcomes this important step forward in Iraq's reintegration with the rest of the world. The notice was distributed to airline industry organizations worldwide, and all airlines may apply. Air service to Baghdad International Airport will be limited initially to three daily round-trip flights (seven days per week), two of which will be regional (Middle East) and one international. The commencement date for commercial air service is still to be determined. Carrier application procedures and eligibility requirements, relating primarily to conformity with international safety and security standards, are outlined in the notice. To provide service to Iraq, U.S. carriers must also meet the respective requirements of the U.S. Central Command, the Department of Transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Transportation Security Administration, and other U.S. agencies. The carrier solicitation notice will be posted on the Coalition Provisional Authority website (www.cpa-iraq.org), which is expected to be operational shortly.
