Attacks Continue on US Troops in Iraq

U.S. forces in Iraq came under more attacks Tuesday as they continue to pursue suspected supporters of the ousted Iraqi regime.

One soldier was slightly wounded when a rocket-propelled grenade hit a vehicle in a U.S. military convoy on the road to Baghdad International Airport.

Shortly afterwards, a U.S. armored vehicle was targeted in central Baghdad. Witnesses say they heard an explosion and saw two vehicles burning -- one American and the other, Iraqi. They also say U.S. troops were seen pulling out bodies from the burning vehicles. But a U.S. military spokesman told VOA he could not immediately confirm any casualties and that both incidents were under investigation.

In the town of Fallujah -- west of Baghdad -- an explosion overnight damaged a mosque. The U.S. military says the blast occurred in a small building adjacent to the mosque.

Local residents say at least five Iraqis were killed and they blamed U.S. troops for the blast.

American troops in the town denied attacking the mosque and said the blast was probably caused by explosives hidden in the compound.

There have been several recent violent clashes between U.S. troops and Iraqis in Fallujah.

U.S. forces have come under almost daily attacks in central and western Iraq -- the mainly Sunni Muslim dominated region that had been a stronghold of the ousted Iraqi regime.

On Sunday, the U.S. military launched a new operation (Operation Sidewinder) aimed at stamping out such attacks.
