Witnesses in Baghdad say an American soldier has been shot, in the latest attack on U.S.-led occupation forces in Iraq.

The witnesses say the soldier was shot in the head as he shopped for video discs Friday at a store in northwest Baghdad. It is not clear from the intial reports whether the soldier was killed. There has been no comment from the U.S. military.

Military officials say an American soldier was killed late Thursday in an ambush near the southern Iraqi town of Najaf. U.S. Central Command says the soldier was attacked while investigating a car theft.

Earlier Friday, U.S. military officials announced the detention of three Iraqis suspected of involvement in Wednesday's disappearance of two American soldiers near Balad, north of Baghdad.

Authorities continue to search for the soldiers, who officials believe were abducted along with their vehicle.

In another incident, an explosion destroyed a U.S. vehicle carrying Iraqi electrical workers, leaving at least one Iraqi dead.

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday he is confident U.S. forces will wipe out elements behind the almost daily attacks that have claimed the lives of at least 21 American troops since major combat was declared over May 1.

Meanwhile, British authorities continue to investigate the killing of six British troops in southern Iraq this week.
