COALITION EFFORTS HELP REBUILD IRAQ (23 June 2003)
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Coalition forces continue to help rebuild Iraq through reconstruction and humanitarian aid.
Some of the tasks accomplished in the last 24 hours:
In Kirkuk, the Coalition fire department team is coordinating with Raytheon Corporation for a contract bid to supply, install and train individuals on desk console, truck mounted and hand held communication equipment for integration into the Kirkuk Fire Department telecommunication system.
In Mosul, the city received 113 benzene and 27 propane trucks on June 20 aiding in the quality of life of residents there.
In Tall Afar, the public safety system team wrote a proclamation to ensure police are doing their duty and not taking bribes therefore reinforcing police authority. The Coalition also turned all fuel operations over to local officials.
In Baquabah, UNICEF delivered 15 one-ton chlorine gas cylinders to the city water treatment plant on June 17. An additional 46 cylinders have been purchased from Jordan for immediate delivery. The cylinders will aid in producing potable water for the city residents.
In Baghdad, the Coalition delivered toys to Mother Teresa's Orphanage and serviced the generator there. School supplies, donated by U.S. parent/teacher organizations and families, were also delivered to the Al Azaam Elementary School. A warehouse stocked with school supplies was identified and released to appropriate organizations for distribution to schools throughout the city.
As security continues to improve in Baghdad, more local shops are opening, particularly along Adan Street, one of the major thoroughfares.
Efforts are continuing to improve the Baghdad soccer stadium with painting, grading the grounds and improving the electrical system.
In Karbala, civil affairs in conjunction with the Karbala City Council, hosted an awards ceremony for the Karbala traffic police. The ceremony recognized five traffic officers for their outstanding achievements and support of Coalition forces. The Karbala Police Department training division opened June 22. The first class will have 100 police candidates.
In As Samawah, the grain silos are at full capacity, therefore trucks loaded with wheat are being diverted to Al Hillah where the grain is needed. Also in As Samawah, the police conducted their own patrol in a high crime area and made 10 drug arrests in one evening.
