SOLDIERS DISCOVER, SEIZE COPPER CACHE
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Soldiers from the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment here found approximately nine tons of copper wire June 16 during an Operation Scorpion Sting neighborhood sweep.
While searching for illegal arms and other contraband in the Thawra neighborhood, in an area known as "Looter's Market," soldiers discovered the wire and found and confiscated three pistols, one rifle and two mortar rounds. The patrol also detained 31 suspected criminals.
The copper wire will now be used to help restore electrical power to Baghdad's neighborhoods.
Operation Scorpion Sting is part of Combined Joint Task Force 7 Operation Desert Scorpion, a nationwide sweep to rid Iraq of Ba'ath party loyalists and paramilitary organizations while removing subversive influences from Baghdad's neighborhoods.
In addition to getting criminals off the streets other phase of the operation is focused on city cleanup by removing military equipment and regime symbols from the streets and conducting humanitarian operations.
