COALITION AND IRAQI POLICE WORK TO MAKE IRAQ SECURE (JUNE 7, 2003)
CAMP DOHA, Kuwait -- Coalition Forces continue to aggressively patrol Iraq to eliminate crimes against people and property, rid populated areas of weapons, ammunition and explosives, and stop the black market trade in fuel and other commodities. Coalition Forces also continue to conduct joint security patrols with Iraqi police to increase the professionalism of the police force and prepare them for their role in a self-governed Iraq.
Weapons Turn-In Program:
Iraqi citizens voluntarily turned in a variety of weapons under the Weapons Turn-In Program that began June 1. As of today's count, Coalition Forces throughout Iraq have received 39 pistols, 65 semi-automatic rifles or shotguns, 202 automatic rifles, 10 machine guns, 58 anti-tank weapons (i.e., rocket-propelled grenade launchers), 79 grenades and other explosive devices.
The amnesty period for the Weapons Turn-In Program will run through June 14.
Coalition Activity:
Iraqi police and Marines from the 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment raided a house in Al Hillah yesterday, detaining 11 men associated with an man who had installed himself as mayor of Surf Al Sakhar. They seized eight AK-47 rifles, two SKS carbines, a shotgun and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with four rounds.
Marines from the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment raided a house in Ad Dinwaniyah yesterday after receiving information that weapons were hidden there. They detained five men and confiscated eight AK-47 rifles and ammunition.
Marines from the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines raided a suspected arms market yesterday in An Najaf. They detained six suspected arms dealers and confiscated several weapons.
First Armored Division soldiers raided a house in Baghdad yesterday and arrested 11 men suspected of being gang members.
Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division raided a house in Al Fallujah yesterday where false identification cards were being made. They detained five Iraqis for questioning and confiscated various materials used for making false identification, to include laminating machines.
In raids and patrolling activity over the last 24 hours, the 1st Armored Division in Baghdad seized 23 AK-47 rifles, 9 pistols, 2 rocket-propelled grenade launchers with 17 rounds, 410 rifle and light machine gun rounds, 300 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition, a 9mm submachine gun and two swords. They also detained people for crimes including looting, theft, weapons violations, car theft, drug dealing and curfew violations.
Police Activity in the Last 24 Hours:
Coalition Forces conducted 9 raids and a total of 2,326 patrols throughout Iraq. Of those patrols, 270 were joint Iraqi and Coalition patrols. They detained or arrested 229 individuals for a variety of criminal activities including looting, curfew violations, weapons violations, theft, larceny and dealing drugs.
Recent Police Activity:
Iraqi police and soldiers from the 233rd Military Police Company conducting a joint patrol in Baghdad recently served an arrest warrant on three larceny suspects. They were able to identify and apprehend one individual, while a search of the area failed to turn up the others. The patrol took the suspect to the East Baghdad Jail.
Iraqi police and soldiers from the 233rd Military Police Company on joint patrol in Baghdad arrested the driver and a passenger of a truck after the driver was unable to produce documents proving ownership. Iraqi police determined that the truck was stolen Iraqi government property. The patrol apprehended the driver and passenger and took them to the East Baghdad Jail.
