COALITION EFFORTS AID IRAQ'S RECOVERY (22 MAY)

Coalition Efforts Aid Iraq's Recovery

CAMP DOHA, Kuwait - Coalition Forces continue to assist in developing a safer and more secure environment in Iraq. Among recent developments:

BAGHDAD

The 3rd Infantry Division provided security and escort for Liquid Propane Gas and distributed 35,000 bottles of LPG. They also coordinated with the World Food Program for future distributions of LPG.

Fifth Corps recently:
. Worked with the United Nations in Ar Rutbah on purchase of two new generators for the water plant.
. Facilitated 15 Office of Rehabilitation and Humanitarian Assistance emergency pay missions for more than 15,000 civil servants throughout Fifth Corps. Emergency payments are also scheduled for almost 40,000 civil servants over the next four days.

MOSUL

101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division "Task Force Neighborhood" mission recently:
. Hired 54 local Iraqis to assist with cleanup operations.
. Established temporary contract for garbage removal with local municipal leader, and removed 280 tons of trash.
. Cleaned out schools, constructed tables and repaired desks.
. Discovered/cleared artillery, mortar rounds and fuses.
. Provided dental care to 39 patients, and performed 31 extracts and five fillings for Iraqi citizens.
. Conducted a medical assessment of local hospital to identify supply and security needs.

101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) also recently:
. Received 45 benzene trucks from Turkey and distributed it to several government and private facilities. Additionally, they delivered 3,055 bottles of propane and 91,000 liters of benzene to private and public locations.
. Completed payments of $138,000 to the Ministries of Justice, Irrigation, Agriculture, and the Electric Cooperation.
. Conducted a meeting between Coalition medical personnel and the Head Doctor of the Qayyarah district to coordinate the distribution of medical supplies to five major clinics.
. Continues to work with a local contractor to dig six wells, and delivered 13,000 liters of water to the town of Bulayj.


KIRKUK

Coalition Civil Affairs and public health team representatives met with newly-selected Health Care Directorate officials concerning selection of directorate officials, returning military doctors to work in the directorate, and directorate facilities.

Coalition forces met to coordinate the air shipment, unloading and distribution of 71,000 lbs of basic medical supplies to Azady hospital, al-Jamhuriya hospital, Kirkuk general hospital, and the maternity hospital at Tellefar. The supplies were donated by a non-governmental organization and included analgesics, antibiotics, gastro-intestinal agents and disposable medical supplies to include bandages, gauze, apparel, gloves, syringes and 1st aid kits. Also donated were nutritional supplements, blankets, and children's apparel.

TAL AFAR

Coalition forces recently assessed the work required to establish a continuous water potable water supply to town with inoperable underground water lines.

KARBALA

Civil Affairs Marines are working with the main Karbala sewage facility to transfer diesel fuel out of the aeration tanks so it can be used in their electric power plant.

AN NASARIYAH

Coalition civil affairs personnel and engineers assessed the condition of water plants in Ash Shatrah. They will develop a proposal for the repair of these facilities. Once repaired, the plants will increase the potable water supply to the An Nasiriyah system.

AD DIWANIYAH

5th Marine Regiment personnel received 20 Army gasoline tanker trucks at the main fuel point and 20,000 pounds of Liquid Propane Gas at the distribution facility. Marines also continued the $20 ORHA stipend payment to the city's teachers.

SAFWAN

Coalition Civil Affairs representatives have submitted plans for completion of the Safwan water pump station as a USAID project. In the meantime UNICEF is making water deliveries to the town, and the town has started making water deliveries to rural areas.

UMM QASR

Marines held a meeting at the water plant in Umm Qsar with the Iraqi water project manager discuss ways to renew or repair the pumps at the Basrah pump station.

Coalition Forces will assist the town council to assist with the local elections on by providing security, ballot boxes, voting slips, and candidate posters.
