Coalition Efforts Aid Iraq's Recovery
CAMP DOHA, Kuwait - Coalition Forces continue to assist in developing a safer and more secure environment in Iraq. Among recent developments:
BAGHDAD
The 3rd Infantry Division "Task Force Neighborhood" mission continues. Recently, they:
. Met with neighborhood leaders to discuss key issues.
. Hauled 23 wrecked vehicles, and removed 580 tons of trash.
. Cleaned out a school, repaired school desks, provided welding support for repairs, and installed fans in school for the blind.
. Discovered and cleared 31 SA-3 surface-to-air missiles that were leaking fuel, destroyed 10 bomblets, and also secured a cache of small arms, which will be removed from the city.
. Army medical personnel conducted an impromptu clinic that treated 20 Iraqi citizens
101st Airborne Division (Airborne Assault) has recently:
. Consolidated 300 of 486 weapons cache sites found in northern Iraq since Operation Iraqi Freedom began.
. Supervised $116,000 of ORHA payments to the Ministries of Oil, Transport, and Media.
. Received and distributed fuel from 36 benzene and five propane trucks from Turkey to several government and private facilities in Northern Iraq.
. Established a new Civil-Military Operations Center in Mosul yesterday that will help coordinate the humanitarian efforts of governmental, non-governmental and private volunteer organizations.
Fifth Corps has recently:
. Facilitated 15 ORHA emergency pay missions to more than 15,000 Iraqi civil servants throughout Baghdad.
. Assisted Baghdad city management to foster a dialogue between city functional and ministry leaders to help solve city crises,.
. Assisted efforts to develop a plan to restore functional police departments.
. Expanded neighborhood advisory councils are being to additional neighborhoods throughout the city.
. Reports dramatically decreased fuel lines over the past 24 hours. Distribution of 50,000 tanks of propane to 18 points in the city begins today.
. Coordinated with DHL representatives at the Baghdad International Airport (BIAP) for a 20-ton delivery of donated diapers, cleaning supplies, food, and toys to be distributed to five local orphanages.
MOSUL
Engineers from 926th Engineer Group conducted an initial structural assessment of the University Computer Center.
Fifth Corps forces met with the manager of The Industrial Bank to jumpstart efforts to restore operations to the bank. The Industrial Bank provides services to the industrial base of Iraq.
Coalition forces assisted in receiving a C-130 humanitarian relief flight from UAE on Monday. The humanitarian relief supplies will be distributed by the UAE in the near future.
The U.S. Army's 588th Engineer Battalion is spearheading a major cleanup effort of destroyed or disabled Iraqi military vehicles near Baqubah,. They have also has hired civilians to pick up trash, and are conducting maintenance on garbage trucks.
AS SAMAWAH
The 5th Marine Regiment began a water distribution program yesterday to ensure water trucks delivered water to areas with critical shortages.
The commander of the 5th Marine Regiment and Governance Support Team members met with the local leadership yesterday to discuss an effective civil governance structure.
AN NAJAF
The 7th Marine Regiment distributed handbills about avoiding unexploded munitions to the city's 25 school representatives.
KARBALA
The 7th Marine Regiment repaired two electric transformers that were damaged during the war. A U.S. Navy medical team also completed assessments of eight hospitals in after meeting with hospital directors.
AN NASARIYAH
25th Marine Regiment Marines helped repair four of six pumps in the city water plant. The propane factory is now operating at 50% capacity and will soon begin delivering 5,000 bottles of propane a day. Marines also assisted in the repair of five sanitation trucks, which are now are able to collect refuse in the city.
The 25th Marine Regiment Marines observed the democratic elections held for the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and department heads for the university in An Nasiriyah.
Civil Affairs personnel delivered 1860 Humanitarian Daily Rations and water to 45 families in the outlying village of Al Zabin.
