Coalition and Iraqi Police Work to Make Iraq Secure
CAMP DOHA, Kuwait -- Coalition Forces continue to aggressively patrol to make Iraq safer for all Iraqis by eliminating smuggling and trade in weapons and explosives. Coalition Forces also continue to conduct training and joint security patrols with Iraqi police in efforts to increase the professionalism of the police force and prepare them for their role in a self-governed Iraq.
Uday Hussein's Companion in Custody
Coalition Forces captured #152 on their Black List, Luay Khayrallah on Friday. He is the brother of Saddam's wife, a companion of Saddam's son, Uday, and a representative of the former regime's intelligence/security apparatus.
Coalition Activity:
Fourth Infantry Division soldiers conducted two cordon and search operations in the vicinity of Tikrit yesterday. The soldiers searched areas suspected of harboring personnel wanted by the coalition for former regime ties, as well as paramilitary forces. They detained 13 suspects for further questioning.
Soldiers from First Brigade Combat Team, Third Infantry Division, conducted a raid on a suspected stolen goods shop in Baghdad, Saturday. They detained four people and confiscated a five-ton truckload of stolen merchandise. They also shut down a black market small arms dealer during the raid.
Fifth Corps soldiers raided the home of Adil Abd Al'Atteel in Fallujah, a suspected Ba'ath Party official, near Fallujah yesterday. Soldiers detained three men and one woman and transported them to a detainee compound for questioning. The raiding force also seized computer equipment believed to contain information on the Ba'ath Party.
The 204th Military Police and Iraq Police Force personnel conducted a search Saturday in Baghdad for persons suspected of selling former Iraqi government vehicles. The Iraqi Police Force detained one subject and seized a civilian vehicle. The subject was taken to an Iraqi jail and the vehicle was secured in a U.S. military compound.
The 615th Military Police and Iraqi Police personnel responded to a report of shots being fired in Baghdad Saturday. The joint team found the suspect in a barbershop, and the Iraqi Police took him to his car where they found and confiscated an AK-47 rifle. Police took the suspect to an Iraqi Police station for further questioning.
The Fourth Infantry Division captured Abullah Hammad Modi, the bodyguard of the former governor of the province. He was responsible for providing monetary resources and inciting anti-coalition sentiment in the Tikrit area, as well as the theft of 70 million Dinars and eight government vehicles.
Soldiers from 3d Infantry Division have removed more than 1,000 truckloads of ammunition, explosives and weapons from Baghdad since their arrival.
Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) conducted a raid on a black market arms dealer in Baghdad, seizing weapons and money. Division Artillery has cleared 282 of 486 weapons and ammunition sites in their zone of operation.
An Iraqi citizen assisted 4th Infantry Division soldiers in detaining three individuals who were selling arms in Baghdad. The individuals are also suspected of firing mortars at Coalition Forces in Tikrit and Samarrah.
U.S. Army military police detained nine Iraqi civilians who were breaking into a gas pipeline near An Nasariyah yesterday. They seized two AK-47 assault rifles.
Coalition elements located the site of an Iraqi artillery emplacement on a soccer field in front of a school near An Nasariyah yesterday. The field was littered with unexploded cluster bomblets and mortar and artillery rounds. Coalition Forces will work to secure the site until explosive ordinance personnel can clear the site.
Iraqi police training graduates in Al Hillah are prepared to assume security at fixed positions after recently completing a training program. U.S. Army military policemen began integrating with the Al Hillah police.
Marines in Karbala continue to pursue the peaceful disestablishment of the Karbala Protection Force (KPF), an armed paramilitary organization. This will support the establishment of a properly vetted and trained police force loyal to the municipality that can eventually take full control of civilian law enforcement.
Police Activity in the Last 24 Hours:
Throughout Iraq, Coalition Forces conducted five raids and 1,154 patrols. They conducted 239 joint patrols with Iraqi Police. They also detained or arrested 494 individuals. The following are highlights of the patrolling effort:
Baghdad: Coalition Forces conducted one raid and 810 patrols. They conducted 10 joint patrols with Iraqi police. The raids and patrols resulted in 311 arrests for various crimes, including looting, curfew violations, weapons violations, theft and car jacking. They also seized 27 rifles, nine pistols, 100 grenades and 500,000 dinars.
Mosul: Coalition Forces conducted one raid and 1,005 patrols. They conducted 163 joint patrols with Iraqi police. Their activities resulted in 92 arrests for various crimes, including possession of weapons and domestic violence. They also seized an AK-47 rifle, six pistols, two grenades and a knife.
Tikrit: Coalition Forces conducted two raids and 24 patrols. They conducted four joint patrols with Iraqi police and detained 13 personnel for ties to Black List personnel.
Al Hillah: Coalition Forces conducted 33 joint patrols with Iraqi police. One of the patrols interrupted a gun battle between two groups of Iraqis, in which they killed two Iraqis, wounded one and detained three.
Al Basrah: Coalition Forces conducted 141 patrols. Their activities resulted in 42 arrests for various crimes, including theft, drug dealing, intimidation and murder. They also confiscated 13 AK-47 rifles, four pistols and two vehicles.
