COALITION EFFORTS AID IRAQ'S RECOVERY (May 15, 2003)
CAMP DOHA, Kuwait - Coalition forces continue to assist in developing a safer and more secure environment in Iraq. Among recent developments:
KARBALA
Marines completed repairs on the city's fire and rescue vehicles, which are now in better condition than before Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Marine Civil affairs personnel have initiated a public announcement effort to assist the city in to eliminating trash dumping outside of the landfill.
AD DINWANIYAH
18 joint Iraqi-Marine police patrols were conducted and eight joint static security positions were manned. The local police have obtained better transportation and communication capabilities, which has increased their ability to perform their mission.
Marines and Iraqi police conducted a joint police raid and recovered two kidnapped children.
Marine Civil Affairs personnel assisted with establishment of the new interim City Council. All positions are temporary and performance based until election guidelines are established.
AS SAMAWAH
Marines assisted local officials to conduct a town council meeting to discuss security, fuel and medical issues.
AL KUT
Marines of Task Force Tarawa conducted a joint Iraqi-Marine police raid and rescued a kidnapped child.
Electric power service continues to be improved with the erection of a 132 kV power line yesterday, which operates in a cycle, 3 hours on and 3 hours off.
Marine Civil Affairs personnel are conducting an assessment of war damage done to the Al Zi Hour School to determine its eligibility for nomination as a priority project.
AN NAJAF
Marine Corps Civil Affairs personnel attended a Tribal Counsel Leadership meeting to assist them in organizing and conducting local elections.
Marines provided security for a from the World Food Program food shipment consisting of 35 truckloads of wheat barley.
Marines signed university and school repair contracts worth $12,000, which are scheduled to begin tomorrow.
AN NASIRIYAH
Task Force Tarawa has rapidly established a relatively well-trained police force and fire department in the city. The police patrol division has 350 personnel and the traffic division has 160 personnel. Both divisions receive on-the-job-training provided by experienced city police officers. The fire department is now operating at pre-war levels.
