Corps Units conduct AT Tuwaitha site assessment
CAMP DOHA, Kuwait - Elements from the U.S. Army's V Corps will soon begin
a detailed assessment of the former Iraqi nuclear facility At Tuwaitha.
The US Army will send a specially trained team to the At Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Center about 30 miles from Baghdad to assess the quantity and condition of the nuclear material stored there.
The At Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Center site was used for storage of declared nuclear material and radioactive sources that were sealed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The team will not compromise any IAEA seals that remain in place.
The team, known as the Nuclear Disablement Team, is from the US Army Nuclear and Chemical Agency (USANCA) and consists of eleven soldiers trained in nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, nuclear materials packaging, health physics and radiation safety.
Initial indications show that several containers were disturbed when local Iraqis pilfered the facility prior to the arrival of coalition forces into the area.
We are continuing our efforts to improve security at the site and are working with former facility employees to communicate the hazard the site poses to unwary trespassers.
