Coalition Forces Provide Security and Stability
CAMP DOHA, Kuwait - Coalition forces continue to actively patrol Iraq to make it safe to conduct humanitarian assistance operations. Recent incidents highlight the dangerous nature of their work:
An unknown number of gunmen armed with AK-47's fired upon a checkpoint in Baghdad early Tuesday morning. One soldier was shot through the thigh, and was evacuated to a medical facility for treatment of his injuries, which were not life threatening. The assailants escaped.
Five Iraqis armed with AK-47s fired on a patrol from the Second Battalion, 25th Marines near Ash Shatrah early Tuesday morning. One Iraqi was killed, one was wounded, one was detained and two escaped. No Marines were injured.
A local Iraqi national fired an AK-47 at a U.S. Army Military Policeman in Baghdad early Tuesday morning. A patrol responded to the area, where they detained one individual with an AK-47 for questioning. There were no casualties.
Unknown gunman fired on elements of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment traveling in their vehicles near Fallujah late Monday evening. Soldiers in the convoy returned fire and evacuated the area. There were no casualties.
Despite the danger, Coalition forces remain dedicated to providing a secure and stable environment throughout Iraq so that infrastructure repair and humanitarian aid can continue.
