Coalition Efforts Aid Iraq's Recovery
CAMP DOHA, Kuwait - Coalition forces continue to assist in developing a safer and more secure environment in Iraq. Among recent activities:
· AL HILLAH: The first police academy class graduated Thursday. The I MEF's Regimental Combat Team 1 conducted a meeting with the Governor, Police Chief and Security Manager to discuss hiring an additional 600 personnel to assume permanent security responsibility at schools, civil/public works stations, electrical plant and hospitals.
· AS SAMAWAH: The police department made great strides recently, and Coalition Forces expect to train and stand-up an effective and uncorrupt 500-man force in the next three weeks. The I MEF's Regimental Combat Team 5 facilitated civil affairs in standing up a local judiciary Thursday with four proven and popularly screened judges. Marines also completed the interior and exterior clean-up, and grounds maintenance of the As Samawah technical college. Coalition Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams destroyed all reported unexploded ordinance (UXO) and arms caches.

· KARBALA: Marine Civil Affairs personnel in I MEF's Regimental Combat Team 7 area conducted their final day of training for specially selected police cadre. Civil Affairs personnel also coordinated the assessment of the Isckan Medical Center, which provides primary care for pre- and post-partum females and pediatric immunizations.
· UMM QASR:. First paying passenger train left for Baghdad.
· AN NASIRIYAH: Civil Affairs personnel in I MEF's Task Force Tarawa area are coordinating pay for municipal workers. The water pumping station is now working.
· MOSUL: A 32-member interim Town Council and Mayor were elected by using confidential balloting procedures.
· AL AMARAH: Electrical power is being restored with support for repairs provided by the UK First Parachute Brigade Engineers.

· Another four Iraqi soldiers captured during Operation Iraqi Freedom were released after accepting parole. There are 3,789 Iraqis paroled to date. Additionally, 158 were released after determining they were noncombatants. Currently, there are 1,770 enemy prisoners of war detained by the Coalition.
