Coalition Efforts Aid Iraq's Recovery

CAMP DOHA, Kuwait - Coalition forces continue to assist in developing a safer and more secure environment in Iraq.  Among recent developments:

· AL HILLAH:The first police academy class graduated Thursday.  A meeting was also conducted with the Governor, Police Chief, and Security Manager to discuss the hiring an additional 600 personnel to assume permanent security responsibilities at school, civil/public works stations, electrical plant, and hospitals. 

· AS SAMAWAH: The police department has made great strides recently, and coalition forces expect to be able to train and stand-up an effective 500 man force in the next three weeks.  The local judiciary was stood up Thursday with four proven and publicly screened judges.  Marines also completed the interior clean up, grounds maintenance and outside police of the As Samawah technical college. Coalition explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams have destroyed all reported unexploded ordinance (UXO) and arms caches.

· KARBALA: Marine Civil Affairs personnel completed training for the specially selected Police Cadre.  Civil Affairs personnel also coordinated the assessment of the Isckan Medical Center, which provides primary care for pre- and post-partum mothers and pediatric immunizations. 

· AN NASIRIYAH: Civil Affairs personnel are coordinating pay for municipal workers.  The water pumping station is now working.

· MOSUL: A 32 member interim Town Council and Mayor was elected by using confidential balloting procedures.

· AL AMARAH: Electrical power is being restored with support for repairs provided by the UK First Parachute Brigade Engineers.

·

· EPW STATUS: Another four Iraqi soldiers captured during Operation Iraqi Freedom were released after accepting parole.  There have been 3,789 Iraqis paroled to date.  Additionally, 3,854 have been released after determining they were noncombatants.  Currently, approximately 1,768 enemy prisoners of war are being detained by the Coalition.
