COALITION FORCES PROVIDE SECURITY, STABILITY

CAMP DOHA, Kuwait - Coalition forces continue to actively patrol Iraq to make it safe for humanitarian assistance operations. Recent incidents highlight the dangerous nature of their work:

Two Iraqis shot at reconnaissance elements of the 3d Infantry Division with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades as they traveled north of Baghdad May 7. The unit returned fire, killing one of the assailants.

Three soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division were injured May 7 when unexploded ordnance they came in contact with detonated. The soldiers were walking in a previously unoccupied area near Baqubah Airfield. All three were evacuated to a Combat Support Hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.

A convoy from the 4th Infantry Division took enemy rifle and machine-gun fire near Bayji May 7. The unit attacked the enemy positions and captured five individuals, weapons, and other military equipment. U.S. soldiers sustained no casualties.

A 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment OH-58D helicopter rolled over in the vicinity of Al Alasad May 6. The two pilots are reported to be in good condition.
Initial reports indicate there was no enemy action. The incident is under investigation.

Names of the injured will be withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Despite the danger, Coalition forces remain dedicated to providing a secure and stable environment throughout Iraq so that infrastructure repair and the delivery of humanitarian aid can continue.
