Monday: During Garner's visit to Basra, it was announced that a Danish diplomat, Ole Wohlers Olsen, has been named regional coordinator for ORHA's southeast region of Iraq. Olsen, 61, has been Danish ambassador to Syria since 1990. "We have now a very serious job in front of us in the most mistreated part of Iraq," Olsen said, referring to the Shiite-populated south. The designation of Olsen changes ORHA's original three-region adminstrative division of Iraq into four regions. The reasons for designating a separate southeast region have not been clarified.Because of the late running of the trip, the delegation cancelled its school visit and in the early afternoon Garner and his team were visiting Basra general hospital.

Monday:Garner visited Basra General Hospital and met with hospital officials to discuss their needs. Outside the closed-door meeting, hospital surgeon Dr. Hussein al-Farhan said the people of Basra still are suffering severely from the lack of clean water."There are many cases of gastro-enteritis because of bad water," he said, adding that about 70 people a day come for treatment at the hospital because of that malady. He said the hospital is suffering from a shortage of drugs, particularly painkillers and anesthetics."Aid organizations are bringing only water when we need drugs as well," he said.Doctors also complained that the security situation remains dangerous in Basra, Iraq's second-largest city.Asked what he would tell the visiting American official, Hussein said, "I would tell him there is no security inside the city. All the people of Basra city are afraid."
