COALITION EFFORTS AID IRAQ'S RECOVERY

CAMP DOHA, Kuwait - Coalition forces continue to assist in developing a safer and more secure environment in Iraq. Among the accomplishments in the last 24 hours:. U.S. Marine Corps aircraft transported a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) Emergency Health Kit to As-Samawah Hospital May 3. The kit includes enough medicine and medical supplies to care for 10,000 people for about 3 months. . Coalition stabilization operations enabled the reopening of 217 schools in Baghdad yesterday. About half the schools in Baghdad have been reopened. . Los Angeles Police Department Officers from the Marine Corps Reserve unit 2nd Battalion 23rd Marine Regiment conducted police training with about 20 Iraqi police officers in Al Hillah. A 4-week long police training program commenced today in Karbala. In An Najaf, reserve Marines who have law enforcement experience are evaluating local police forces and making recommendations for training in non-lethal techniques and ethics of law enforcement. . Navy Seabees are working on a natural gas pipeline and are near completion of repairs which will restore power to An Najaf.. Train service has been re-established between Mosul and Umm Qasr. Daylight passenger service from Basra to Baghdad has resumed. . Coalition Civil Affairs personnel assisted local officials and citizens in Al Basrah and Umm Qasr to establish a "neighborhood watch" system. This is to gain the local population's assistance in the Coalition's efforts to identify efforts by individuals and groups suspected of working to disrupt efforts to return the region to normalcy. . Coalition forces supervised the delivery of $300,000 of medical supplies to Karbala's 25 clinics and four hospitals.. Civil Affairs personnel delivered Kuwaiti rations and water to 52 families in Abu Tubar Khaybir. The rations consisted of 960 bottles of water and 2520 meals, enough for five meals per person. . Civil Affairs personnel distributed 2,100 Kuwaiti Rations to approximately 300 local Beduins near Tallil. . Civil Affairs personnel conducted a mosquito abatement assessment near Baghdad International Airport. Recommendations made to reduce the threat of illness include: mowing the grass around leach field drainage areas, eliminating open septic cisterns, and spraying the area by Coalition preventative medicine teams.. Civil Affairs teams arranged for the payment of more than 500 employees at the Iraqi National Museum. Faculty at the University of Baghdad were also paid. . Another 325 Iraqi soldiers captured during Operation Iraqi Freedom were released after accepting parole. To date, 3,176 have been paroled. Additionally, 3,002 have been released after determining they were noncombatants. There are approximately 3,200 enemy prisoners of war being detained by the Coalition.. Approximately 9,500 pounds of bleach used for water purification and hospital sanitization are scheduled to arrive in the next few days at An Nasiriyah and Al Kut. . Oil for Food: about 800 metric tons of food has been transported from Baghdad to Ad Diwaniyah for distribution.
