Coalition Forces Continue HA Despite Disruptions

CAMP DOHA, Kuwait - Coalition forces continues to focus military operations on conducting security patrols, humanitarian assistance missions, facility assessments and securing sensitive sites in key Iraqi cities.

Third Infantry Division soldiers were on patrol early this morning about 10 kilometers northeast of the Baghdad International Airport when unknown assailants shot a flare into the air and fired at them with small arms.  The patrol returned fire and the suspects fled southward on foot.  The soldiers later found an unoccupied vehicle with its engine still running in the vicinity of where the suspects had fired their weapons.  They searched the car and found an empty revolver, two boxes of ammunition and two flares.  The soldiers took the car back to their unit's Tactical Operations Center for further investigation and safekeeping. No U.S. soldiers were injured.

Several Third Infantry Division soldiers received minor injuries yesterday evening when a hand grenade accidentally exploded while they were unloading ammunition from a vehicle in Baghdad.

Two Fourth Infantry Division AH-64 Apache helicopters destroyed 17 trucks yesterday afternoon in the vicinity of Tikrit when Iraqi paramilitary forces attempted to drive away after raiding an ammunition site. The Apache fired warning shots twice, then destroyed the vehicles when they continued to load them.

The names of the injured soldiers will be withheld until notification of next of kin.

Despite the danger, Coalition forces remains dedicated to setting the conditions throughout Iraq so that the delivery of humanitarian aid, and infrastructure repair can continue.
