MARINE CORPS SUPER STALLION HELICOPTER DESTROYED
AN NAJAF, Iraq - A CH-53 'Super Stallion' heavy-lift helicopter had an engine fire and was forced to make a precautionary landing at approximately 10:30 a.m. April 30 in the vicinity of An Najaf.
The aircraft landed in what is best described as a 'hard landing', then rolled, and subsequently caught fire. The crew escaped without injury and was successfully rescued by another helicopter operating in the area.
The helicopter was assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade and hostile fire is not a cause in this precautionary landing. The incident is under investigation.
