CONFLICT

Notes:
-
Seeds of turmoil were sown at the end of WWI when peacemakers dismantled the Ottoman Empire and named two of the winning allies, Britain and France, to fill the administrative void. Boundaries of new nations drawn to suit European interests often neglected local history and traditions, and nationalist movements arose. New and independent Arab states - Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon, Jordon - emerged from these struggles and have occasionally battled over resources and territory. But the most bitter conflict came in British-run Palestine, where a half a million Jews had settled by the end of WWII, many of them determined to create a homeland. When Israel declared independence, five Arab nations attacked the Jewish state - the first of the six Arab-Israeli wars.
