Notes:

Tubeless Tires: Tubeless tires go flat for no apparent reason. Tubeless tires go flat from fine sand working its way b/w the rim and the tire and as the tire expands and contracts with changing temps. Sand breaks pressure seal and allows air to escape...fix: use inner tubes inside tubeless tires
High-Failure Repair Parts: dust, sand, terrain, temps cause estimated 50% increase in repair parts required to support combat unit...additional stocks of friction-bearing parts, plastic, and rubber parts, and rubber seals. Also, cracking and breaking of cast metal parts is common due to constant excessive vibration during operations
Communications "Dead Spots": frequent problems with "dead spots", unique in desert. Heavy deposition of minerals in certain places causes an overabundance of reflection and distortion. Can halt radio wave communication entirely even in relatively flat areas
Desert Wildlife: In 1982, several individuals were stung by scorpions who bedded down directly on the ground, another almost biten by one that slipped into rucksack and put into vehicle...sleep on cot/air mattress...shake out equipment and clothing before using
Tires: driving in desert decrease tire life...not unusual for tires to wear out after 700 miles of combined off/on road driving...logistically plan to provide greater supply of spares
Flash Floods: majority of flash floods occur in wadis...offers advantages (security/seclusion/source of water)...disadvantages (six to eight feet)...encampments should be established on high ground, wadis not to be avoided entirely but used intelligently
