Tracking Inspections: 29 DECEMBER 2002

A total of 28 inspectors visited four sites on 29 December. The UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) said in its daily briefing that six UNMOVIC and two IAEA inspectors left Baghdad on 29 December, and each agency received six new inspectors in Baghdad, bringing the total number of inspectors in Iraq to 100 for UNMOVIC and 10 for the IAEA.

A team of three IAEA inspectors visited the Al-Ezz State Company, which specializes in "electronic industries," according to the ministry. Inspectors inquired as to changes since 1998, toured the facilities, and conducted radiological testing, the ministry stated. UNMOVIC stated that Al-Ezz produces generic electronic equipment, namely radio communications equipment, power distribution equipment, and telephone-switching boards.

The IAEA inspection team then visited the Al-Salam State Company, which also specializes in "electronic industries," where they toured a research center and checked equipment seals and workshops, the ministry stated. UNMOVIC noted that the Al-Salam factory produces communications equipment for civilian and military use.

A team of 17 UNMOVIC inspectors visited the Al-Zahrawi Center belonging to the Saad State Company where inspectors visited different departments and checked a computer, the ministry noted. UNMOVIC referred to the Al-Zahrawi Center as the "Chemical Engineering Design Center" and said that it is part of the Saad Company, which owns the Ibn Younis Center inspected on 28 December. It said Al-Zahrawi is "involved in various projects for chemical and petrochemical production facilities." Inspectors checked archives and reviewed current projects and personnel records.

A joint team of eight chemical, biological, and missile inspectors went to the State Customs Commission belonging to the Ministry of Finance, where they questioned the director-general on work procedures and procedures for customs clearing.
