FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

PREDATOR UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE MISSING IN SOUTHERN IRAQ

MACDILL AFB, FL - At approximately 7:30 a.m. (EST), a U.S. Predator Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) reconnaissance aircraft was reported missing in Southern Iraq after being fired upon by Iraqi military aircraft. The Predator is assumed lost.

The Predator is one of many systems used for reconnaissance and surveillance to monitor Iraqi compliance with UN Security Council resolutions.

Today's action is the latest chapter in a lengthy list of hostile acts by the Iraqi regime. In 2002, the Iraqi regime has fired at Coalition aircraft nearly 500 times. The Iraqi regime has fired on Coalition aircraft on 32 days since November 8 when UN Resolution 1441 was signed.
