Iraqi Dissidents Discuss Local Governance for Iraq's Future
(Meeting in Washington part of "Future of Iraq" project) (240) The State Department announced the start of a working group session to discuss local government in Iraq December 18-19. The working group is part of the "Future of Iraq" project, according to a State Department press notice released December 18. The local government session will host 15 "Free Iraqis" who will discuss "interactions with a central government; an examination of the separation of powers; and how private institutions, community organizers, and businesses can work with local governments to provide more effective services to the Iraqi people," according to the press notice. Following is the text of the press notice on the Iraqi working group meeting: (begin text) U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of the Spokesman December 18, 2002 NOTICE TO THE PRESS Future of Iraq, Local Government Working Group Meeting The first session of the Future of Iraq project working group on Local Government will convene on December 18-19, 2002 in Washington, DC. At this session, the State Department's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs will host approximately 15 "Free Iraqis" who have expressed an interest in how local and regional governments function. Specifically, interactions with a central government; an examination of the separation of powers; and how private institutions, community organizers, and businesses can work with local governments to provide more effective services to the Iraqi people.
