Powell Says U.S. Offers "Fullest" Support for U.N. Inspection Efforts
(Secretary briefs after meeting with U.N.'s Hans Blix, Mohamed ElBaradei) (200) By Phillip Kurata Washington File Staff Writer Washington -- Secretary of State Colin Powell said the United States has offered its "fullest" support for the UN efforts to inspect Iraq for weapons of mass destruction. "[W]e think the best way to support their efforts is with a new U.N. Security Council resolution setting out very tough standards and conditions for the conduct of new inspections. I think we have an agreement that such a resolution would be useful. And I think increasingly the members of the council are coming to the conclusion that such a resolution would be useful," Powell said in Washington October 4. He made the statement after meeting with Hans Blix, the chief of the UN weapons inspection team for Iraq, and Mohamed ElBaradei, the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency. ElBaradei said the common objective of the international community is the complete disarmament of Iraq. (Distributed by the Office of International Information Programs, U.S. Department of State.
