COALITION AIRCRAFT DROP LEAFLETS IN IRAQ
October 3, 2002
MACDILL AFB, FL -- Coalition aircraft today dropped 120,000 leaflets in Iraq with a clear message: fire on or target our aircraft and we will attack you.
The 3 inch by 6 inch flyers, written in Arabic, were dropped in two fiberglass "leaflet bombs" that contained 60,000 leaflets each. The bombs exploded above the target area and drifted to the ground.
The leaflets were dropped in the vicinity of Tallil, about 160 miles southeast of Baghdad.
The Iraqi response was to attack the plane dropping the flyers, which resulted in an airstrike against Iraqi air defense sector headquarters and integrated operations center in the same area as the leaflet drop. (See CENTCOM News Release 02-10-02, which is posted as the Latest Press Release on our web page.)
The last time Coalition aircraft dropped leaflets in Iraq was in October 2001.
