/// EDS: THIS REPORT UPDATES CR 2-279313 ///
INTRO: U-S planes have struck another target in southern Iraq, an antiaircraft missile base near (the city of) an-Nasiriyah. V-O-A's David Swan reports this is the second attack in the southern no-fly zone in less than a week.
TEXT: A handful of Air Force (F-16) fighter-bombers dropped precision-guided munitions on the site about 280 kilometers southeast of Baghdad.
A Pentagon spokesman, Admiral Craig Quigley, says the target was part of a network that presents a growing danger to allied planes.
/// QUIGLEY ACT ///
Another element in the Iraqi integrated air-defense system that had been very active in threatening coalition aircrews. And the opportunity presented itself, good planning was carried out, and we did the strike.
/// END ACT ///
The raid was smaller than last week's strike, which included both American and British aircraft. The coalition has flown over southern and northern Iraq since the Gulf War to protect the Shi'ite and Kurdish populations.
The Iraqis have lately stepped up their effort to bring down the patrolling aircraft. An American U-Two spy plane was nearly hit by a missile a few weeks ago.
